Joining the Mt Hotham Ski Patrol

The pathway to joining the Mt Hotham Ski Patrol begins with our recruitment program.
Each season, typically in August, we run an on-snow skills test—one midweek and one on a weekend. Dates are set at the start of the season, and applications are open to both skiers and snowboarders. Registration is required in advance, as places are limited.
If you pass the skills test, you’ll then spend 1½ days shadowing our Patrollers. This gives you a closer look at what the role involves and allows us to get to know you better.
Following the shadowing period, you’ll attend an interview with the Patrol Director, Assistant Patrol Director, and Volunteer Patrol Captain. This is your opportunity to ask questions about patrolling at Mt Hotham and for us to assess whether you’re a good fit for the team.
Because positions are limited each season, only selected candidates will be offered a Trainee Patroller role for the following season.
If you accept the offer, you must register for and pass the Australian Ski Patrol Association (ASPA) Advanced Emergency Medical Care course. All Patrollers—regardless of other medical qualifications—must be ASPA certified and follow ASPA protocols while on duty.
Successful applicants must then complete a two-season training program as a volunteer.

Hotham Patrol training program:

Before Season 1:
Complete and pass the ASPA Advanced Emergency Care course
Courses are held in Melbourne, Jindabyne and Tasmania during March–May.
More information: https://www.skipatrol.org.au/course-enrolment/

Season 1:
·       Minimum commitment: 20 days
·       Strong focus on participating in early season intensive training in June and July
Season 2:
·       Minimum commitment: 20 days
·      Trainees are expected to become independent Patrollers by the end of this season
Candidates with existing skills or the capacity to commit additional time may be able to complete training within a single season. Although the process is demanding, it’s highly rewarding—you’ll develop advanced skills while working with a fantastic team.
Ongoing Commitment
·     After completing the training program, Patrollers must commit to a minimum of 15 days each season.
·     New Patrollers are expected to commit to at least five years of service once their training is complete.
·     Paid patrol positions may occasionally become available for those interested in further involvement.
